Vandalism at Tanjong Tokong bridge damages lifts and mirrors, halting access for elderly, pregnant women and disabled persons in Penang.
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council is taking a serious view of vandalism at a pedestrian overhead bridge in Tanjong Tokong.
An inspection found lifts were completely shut down due to severe damage caused by liquid poured on wiring and sensors.
Council member Lee Seng Hwai said the liquid caused components to burn, forcing a full halt to all lift operations until repairs are done.
The inspection also found broken mirrors on the bridge, increasing safety risks for users and vehicles below.
Lee stated the bridge, opened in 2023, connects pedestrian paths from Jalan Fettes to Jalan Seri Tanjung Pinang.
He emphasised the lifts are crucial for senior citizens, pregnant women and persons with disabilities.
The damage directly denies the rights and jeopardises the safety of these vulnerable groups, he said.
Lee added that such vandalism tarnishes the image of Penang and Malaysia for tourists.
It reflects poorly on public awareness for maintaining facilities and the civilisation level of a tourist state, he noted.
