Tottenham captain Romero apologises as club crisis deepens

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero apologises to fans and hints at club leadership issues after a dismal run leaves Spurs 14th in the Premier League.

LONDON: Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has apologised to fans as a deepening crisis engulfs the club.

The apology came after a 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth left Spurs with just two wins from their last 12 Premier League games, leaving them 14th in the table.

In a social media post, Romero said the players were responsible but suggested the club’s hierarchy should be more vocal in difficult times.

“At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don’t – as has been happening for several years now,” Romero wrote on Instagram.

“They only show up when things are going well.”

The Argentinian defender later deleted and reposted a slightly amended version of his message.

Manager Thomas Frank, under increasing pressure in his first season, confirmed he and sporting director Johan Lange had spoken to Romero about keeping issues internal.

“I said it when I named him the captain that even though he’s an experienced player, he’s tried a lot, he’s still a young leader,” Frank said.

“But also when you’re a young leader sometimes you make a mistake, of course it’s good to keep it internally.”

The club’s injury woes worsened with Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall picking up knocks at Bournemouth.

Frank also confirmed key forward Mohammed Kudus is out with a tendon and quad injury until after the March international break.

Romero had previously defended former manager Ange Postecoglou, who was sacked last year despite winning the Europa League.
