Anwar condemns global hypocrisy and moral failure over Gaza crisis

PM Anwar Ibrahim criticises world leaders for hypocrisy and inaction on Gaza, warning it fuels extremism and ignores decades of Palestinian suffering.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has accused global leadership of hypocrisy and a moral failure in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

In an interview with Turkish broadcaster TRT World, he described the international response as a “divorce of conscience” and an “abandonment of reason and morality”.

Anwar questioned the world’s understanding of the historical roots of the Palestinian issue during his recent three-day official visit to Turkiye.

“You mean to say that after all that’s happening in the world, you still fail to understand historical antecedents of Palestine? I don’t believe this,” he said.

He suggested the failure to grasp the issue could not be explained by ignorance alone.

The Prime Minister drew parallels with European history, asking if humanity had learnt from past atrocities.

“So I remember in Germany, what happened to our humanity? What happened to our historical experience in Germany? Haven’t we learnt anything?” he said.

Anwar stated the situation in Gaza reflects a continuation of colonial injustice that is still thriving.

“People are dying, people are being treated like slaves, and not this year not after Oct 7, for decades, for half a century, more than half a century,” he stressed.

He warned that continued international inaction would only invite further anger, enmity, and extremism.

On aid access, he expressed frustration over the blockade preventing humanitarian deliveries.

“Hundreds of containers are waiting, idle, to cross the border. And people are dying on the other side,” Anwar said, highlighting children dying from hunger.
