Ex-army chief resigns early amid procurement probe

Hafizuddeain steps down effective Jan 1 as investigations continue into alleged military procurement issues

KUALA LUMPUR: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said former Army Chief Tan Sri Datuk Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantam, who has been on leave since late December 2025, has submitted a letter expressing his intention to step down early from the army.

“I have received a letter from the lawyer of Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain stating his intention to step down early from the army, effective Jan 1. This allows us to begin the process of appointing a new Chief of Defence Forces,” Khaled told reporters after the New Year Address launch today at Wisma Perwira ATM.

The position is currently being carried out by Navy Chief Tan Sri Datuk Zulhelmy Ithnain, with the final appointment subject to the approval of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Hafizuddeain was placed on leave in late December 2025 to facilitate investigations into alleged irregularities involving military procurement.

His scheduled appointment as Chief of Defence Forces, which was expected to take effect earlier this year, was subsequently deferred pending the outcome of the case.

During his New Year address, Khaled said corruption within the defence system weakens national security and damages the credibility of the armed forces.

“In the end, we are unable to give our best to the country and to our personnel. This year, the fight against corruption will be intensified on a large scale,” he said.
