M’sian calls out parents for crowding school canteen on first day of school

“The canteen was packed with parents, to the point that they were blocking the paths where the children were supposed to line up.”

JAN 12 marked the first day of school for many, and it was natural for eager and anxious parents to tag along with their seven-year-olds to ensure a smooth start.

However, one Malaysian took to social media to call out parents for overcrowding a school canteen, saying their presence made it difficult for students to move around and eat during recess.

In a Threads post, she shared that the school canteen was not only packed with parents, but to the point that they were blocking the paths where the children were supposed to line up.

“That’s not even counting those who sat down to eat with their children.”

To make matters worse, since the lower primary students have recess at the same time, seating is limited with the parents crowding the canteen.

“When parents crowd the place like this, it only slows down how quickly the children can eat.

“Please, parents—have a bit of common sense,” she pleaded in her post.

Other parents shared their experiences online as well. One said:

“Alhamdulillah, the management at my child’s school is well-organised. Teachers put signage stands on each table in every classroom. Parents also don’t sit until all students are seated, but most of them stand around watching their children eat.”

Another commented: “It’s the same at my child’s school. Recess is combined for Year 2 and Year 3, but it’s full of parents. How are the Year 1 students supposed to learn how to buy food? It’s unfair to the kids.”
