MACC widens MAF corruption probe to entire defence ministry systems

MACC chief says investigation into armed forces corruption scandal covers all ministry procedures, not just specific cases, with more officers likely to be called.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s investigation into the armed forces corruption scandal involves a comprehensive review of the entire Ministry of Defence (Mindef).

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the probe is not limited to specific cases but examines overall procedures and systems within the ministry.

He said the investigation considers potential weaknesses in systems, procedures, and long-standing issues at Mindef.

“In the procurement issue at Mindef, the matter of public concern is the issue of transparency and governance,” Azam said.

“We cannot only look at the case that is currently being investigated, but also several other issues that may have existed in Mindef for a long time.”

He was commenting on allegations involving the former army chief and several senior officers questioned by the MACC.

Azam stated the investigation’s scale is significant based on the rank of the individuals involved.

“Based on the rank involved, this issue is indeed big,” he said.

He did not rule out the possibility that more officers would be identified and called to assist as the investigation continues.

The MACC will soon meet Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin to discuss Mindef issues and comprehensive improvements to internal procedures.

“MACC will focus on aspects of regulations, procedures and leakage issues which are among our main concerns as an enforcement body, for the benefit of the people,” Azam said.

He praised Mohamed Khaled’s plan to overhaul the Mindef Anti-Corruption Plan comprehensively this year.

The minister’s action aims to restore public trust and strengthen integrity in the country’s defence sector. – Bernama
