Woman and boyfriend face separate charges over neglect and hurt of 10-year-old boy

A woman pleaded not guilty to neglecting her son, while her boyfriend faces charges for causing hurt and possessing obscene material on his phone.

SEREMBAN: An unemployed woman pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here to a charge of neglecting her 10-year-old son.

Her boyfriend was separately charged with causing hurt to the same boy.

Dayang Nurshida, 30, was accused of neglecting the child in a manner likely to cause physical harm at an apartment in Jalan Desa Palma, Nilai.

The alleged neglect occurred between September 2025 and January this year.

She was charged under Section 31(1)(A) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or up to 20 years’ imprisonment.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Nazihah Asmuni did not offer bail, citing the dubious status of the woman’s citizenship.

“Checks found the accused is a Baja, but based on the victim’s birth certificate, the nationality of her mother is Filipino,” she said.

Judge Datin Surita Budin did not allow bail and set February 23 for mention.

Meanwhile, the woman’s boyfriend, Masran, 22, pleaded not guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing injury to the child.

The alleged incident occurred at the same location on January 6.

He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to a year in jail or a RM2,000 fine.

Masran, a bartender, also pleaded not guilty to a separate charge of possessing obscene material.

He was accused of having four obscene photographs and four video recordings on his mobile phone on January 7.

That charge, under Section 292 of the Penal Code, carries imprisonment of up to three years or a fine.

The court allowed Masran bail of RM4,500 for both charges and set February 16 for mention.

The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutors P. Rubini and Nik Nur Aqilah Syarfa Nik Zaidi.

Masran was represented by lawyers from the National Legal Aid Foundation, Y.Y Ng and Ardelliza Izmaryanti Shafie.
