‘Digger’ trailer revisits Tom Cruise’s screen history

Cruise returns in a new black comedy Digger

A new trailer for Digger opens with a retrospective of Tom Cruise’s career before revealing footage from the actor’s upcoming film.

Released on June 24, the trailer includes clips from Cruise’s earlier films and introduces his latest character Digger Rockwell.

The film follows a powerful man attempting to present himself as humanity’s saviour after causing a disaster that threatens the world.

Digger turns global crisis into the backdrop for a character-driven satire.
The film trades Cruise’s familiar heroic image for a more grotesque comic persona.

Cruise appears with grey hair and prosthetic makeup, while the footage shows unrest, military aircraft and destruction.

The film is directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone. The satirical black comedy marks Inarritu’s first English-language feature since The Revenant in 2015.

The cast also includes Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, Michael Stuhlbarg and John Goodman. Goodman plays the US president, while Ahmed appears as his assistant.

The film was shot in the UK, with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki working on the production. It was filmed on 35mm using the VistaVision format.

Cruise also serves as a producer alongside Iñárritu and Mary Parent. The film is scheduled to open in cinemas on Oct 2.
