Man drowns during white-water rafting activity in Sabah river

A man in his 40s drowned after falling into a river during a rafting activity in Sapulut, Nabawan, with rescue efforts hampered by difficult terrain.

NABAWAN: A man drowned after falling into a river while participating in a white-water rafting activity in Sapulut here.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said the victim, identified as Ramli Mayakin and believed to be in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene by Health Ministry personnel.

The department received an emergency call at 12.40 pm and dispatched 12 personnel to the location, about 53 kilometres from the Nabawan Fire and Rescue Station.

“The fire team faced difficulty accessing the site due to narrow routes and unpaved roads,” it said in a statement.

Upon arrival, the operation commander reported that the victim had been found unconscious on the riverbank by members of the public.

Firefighters retrieved the victim from the river before handing the body over to the police for further investigation.
