217 foreign nationals detained in immigration raids at KL malls

Malaysian Immigration detained 217 foreigners in raids at Plaza Kotaraya and Galaxy Ampang Mall for various immigration offences.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Immigration Department detained 217 foreign nationals during enforcement operations at two shopping malls in the Klang Valley today.

The three-hour raids were conducted at Plaza Kotaraya in Pudu and Galaxy Ampang Mall in Ampang Jaya.

Immigration Deputy Director-General (Operations) Datuk Lokman Effendi Ramli said 120 immigration officers were involved in the operations.

They were supported by 13 officers from the National Registration Department.

At Plaza Kotaraya, officers inspected 652 foreigners and arrested 65 for various immigration offences.

At Galaxy Ampang Mall, 394 foreigners were checked, resulting in 152 arrests.

Those detained were aged between 21 and 63, comprising 55 men and 162 women.

The detainees included 89 Myanmar nationals, 60 Indonesians, and 51 Filipinos.

Others detained were from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Germany.

All detainees were sent to the Beranang Immigration Detention Depot and Kuala Lumpur International Airport for further action.

Their cases are being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and related regulations.

Lokman Effendi also provided nationwide enforcement statistics for the first half of January.

From January 1 to 15, the department carried out 504 enforcement operations across the country.

These operations led to the detention of 1,759 foreign nationals for immigration offences.

A total of 35 employers were also detained during this period.
