Amazon announces 16,000 job cuts worldwide as part of a restructuring plan to streamline operations and reduce bureaucracy.

NEW YORK: Amazon will cut 16,000 jobs worldwide as part of a restructuring plan announced in October.

Senior vice president Beth Galetti said the cuts are aimed at “reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy.”

The latest reductions are part of a total plan to cut roughly 30,000 positions.

Media reports from October indicated these cuts would impact nearly 10% of Amazon’s 350,000 office jobs.

The layoffs are not expected to affect distribution and warehouse workers, who form the bulk of its 1.5 million employees.

The company did not provide a breakdown of the latest 16,000 job cuts.

It stated only that “every team will continue to evaluate the ownership, speed, and capacity to invent for customers, and make adjustments as appropriate.”

Amazon refused to comment on earlier reports linking the restructuring to increased investments in artificial intelligence.

The company will release its full-year 2025 results on February 6.

It will hold a conference call that will be broadcast live following the results.
