Police seize 261kg of drugs and arrest four men after uncovering a syndicate using short-term homestay rentals as mobile storage centres.
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have busted a drug syndicate using rented homestays as mobile storage centres. Four men were arrested in a raid on a terrace house in Segambut last Tuesday.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said 250 plastic tea bags containing 261kg of syabu were seized. The drugs have an estimated street value of RM13 million.
Investigations show the syndicate had been active for six months. They rented rural houses for four-day periods at RM200 per day to store drugs before distribution.
“The syndicate frequently moved from one location to another to avoid detection,” Fadil said at a press conference today.
Each one-kilogramme tea bag of syabu is worth about RM50,000. The total haul could have supplied up to 1.3 million users.
Police also seized two vehicles with fake registration numbers and an undisclosed amount of cash. The vehicles were a Toyota Vellfire and a Perodua Alza.
Three of the four arrested men, aged between 23 and 32, have prior criminal records. All four are remanded until February 3.
They are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty.
“We are still actively tracking down the remaining members of the syndicate and investigations are ongoing,” Fadil added.
