ECRL fares to be set after comprehensive study, says Loke

ECRL fares will be determined by a comprehensive APAD study and require authority approval, with an announcement expected months before the line’s 2027 launch.

KOTA BHARU: Fares for the East Coast Rail Link will be set based on a comprehensive study and are subject to approval by the relevant authorities, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He said the fares would be announced several months before operations begin.

The ministry is currently focused on construction and installation works to ensure the project is completed on schedule.

Testing and commissioning phases are essential and must be conducted prior to fare setting, Loke said after visiting project sites.

Construction of the 665-kilometre ECRL network has achieved an overall progress of 90.81% as of December 2025.

This surpasses the project target of 90% and follows the completion of excavation for all 14 tunnels.

More than 500 km of track has been laid and over 12,000 Overhead Catenary System poles have been installed.

The Kota Bharu ECRL Station project has reached 82.06% completion and is expected to be fully finished by the second quarter of 2026.

Built on a 20.94-hectare site, the station draws inspiration from Kelantan’s heritage and is equipped with 500 parking spaces.

The 132-kilovolt electricity supply to Feeder Station 01 has been successfully activated ahead of schedule.

The 43-kilometre ECRL line in Kelantan has recorded 96.67% completion as of December 2025.

It covers the Kota Bharu Station in Tunjong and the Pasir Puteh Station in Cherang Tuli for passenger and cargo services.

ECRL will receive 11 train sets, each comprising six carriages, within the next two weeks.

The facility for these trains will be introduced in Kuantan, Pahang.

The project is expected to enter a comprehensive testing and commissioning phase from June 2026.

The ministry is optimistic the line from Kota Bharu to the Gombak Integrated Terminal will be completed by December as scheduled.

Commercial operations are expected to begin in January 2027.
