PDRM officers depart for UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan

Sixteen police officers are set for a year-long deployment with the UN Mission in South Sudan, focusing on mentoring and institutional reform.

SEPANG: Sixteen police officers departed for South Sudan to join the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) for a year-long peacekeeping deployment.

The contingent, led by DSP Chan Yew Hiok, comprises 10 senior officers and six lower-rank personnel.

Bukit Aman Deputy Director of Management (Administration) Datuk Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yussof said the deployment reflects the international community’s trust in PDRM as a disciplined and credible force.

“This deployment is more than just an operational assignment overseas, serving also as a mission of security diplomacy, humanitarian assistance and global security,” he said at a coordination ceremony.

The officers will serve as individual police officers (IPOs) tasked with advising and mentoring the South Sudan National Police Service.

Ahmad Dzaffir emphasised that policing in a post-conflict country must be grounded in trust, legitimacy and justice.

He said the officers play a crucial role in reforming policing institutions and strengthening human rights-based law enforcement.

“This is the true value of a peacekeeping mission; it’s not just about containing conflict, but about laying the groundwork for sustainable peace for future generations,” he added.

Contingent Head DSP Chan Yew Hiok said she would use her experience to support women affected by the conflict.

“I have experience in caring for women, especially in sexual cases. I will use that experience to assist them,” she stated.

Another officer, ASP Tina Manchu, said the mission aims to share the benefits of peace enjoyed in Malaysia.

“The peace we enjoy in Malaysia is something I believe should be shared with other nations,” she said.

PDRM’s active participation in UN peacekeeping missions began with a deployment to Angola in 1991.

This was followed by missions in Darfur in 2008 and UNMISS since 2011.
