Communications minister calls for mature, fact-based campaigning after Pakatan Harapan candidate’s billboards were vandalised in Rantau.
SEREMBAN: Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil has urged all parties to conduct a healthy campaign for the Negeri Sembilan State Election based on ideas and facts, without resorting to slander or acts of sabotage.
He said this following complaints that a Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate’s billboards at the Rantau state constituency had been vandalised during the election campaign.
“PH candidate for the Rantau state seat, Dr Azizul Hakim Mahdi, said several billboards of his have been vandalised.
“… and there have also been several posts on Facebook that appear to show individuals vandalising those billboards. We leave such acts of sabotage to the authorities to investigate and take appropriate action. It is an offence,” he said today.
He told reporters this after accompanying the PH candidate for Sikamat state seat, Nur Azman Mohamad, on a campaign walkabout at the Paroi Stadium Seremban City Council stalls here today.
Fahmi urged all parties to ensure the election campaign is conducted in a mature manner by focusing on the contest of ideas and facts, rather than slander or actions that could create tension.
“We encourage and remind all parties to campaign in a healthy manner and to base their campaigns on ideas and facts, not on slander or acts of sabotage,” he said.
Commenting on the overall election campaign so far, Fahmi said he was satisfied with its progress but expects the contest to become more intense in the final week.
“This is just the first week, so many may still be in second gear, not yet sixth gear.
“By next week, we will probably see the campaign heat up further. This afternoon, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also campaigned at four or five locations, and insya-Allah, more leaders will join the campaign trail in the coming days,” he said.
The Election Commission (EC) has set Aug 1 as polling day for the Negeri Sembilan state election, with early voting scheduled for July 28.
