Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim directs border and anti-corruption agencies to intensify operations against illegal e-waste smuggling and bribery.
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered the Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) and related agencies to intensify operations against the illegal importation of electronic waste (e-waste).
AKPS director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain (pic) said the prime minister demanded cooperation with the MACC and police to combat the activity.
“The Prime Minister strongly instructed that if any enforcement officer is found providing protection and accepting bribes in this smuggling activity, strict action must be taken regardless of who he is,” he said.
Speaking at an address here, he said the issue of integrity in all national enforcement agencies had been strongly questioned by Anwar.
Mohd Shuhaily said cooperation with the MACC and Immigration Department had intensified, resulting in 39 arrests.
He stressed the AKPS leadership will not compromise with activities detrimental to national security.
The director-general said AKPS’s 2026 Key Performance Indicators will emphasise the value of confiscations and saving government funds from leakages.
“This approach must be implemented comprehensively by prioritising national security to close all loopholes,” he added.
Previously, Anwar said the government had given full rein to authorities to combat corruption and the illegal importation of e-waste.
The prime minister said the Cabinet had strictly prohibited making Malaysia a dumping ground for such waste.
Meanwhile, Mohd Shuhaily said AKPS would begin operations at the new Johor Bahru-Singapore Rail Transit System (RTS) entry points this year.
He said the RTS Bill would be tabled in the current Parliament session.
