Two Indonesians jailed for RM15,000 lottery scam targeting elderly man

Two Indonesian men sentenced to two years in jail for cheating a 77-year-old man of RM15,000 in a fake lottery win scam in Teluk Intan

TELUK INTAN: Two Indonesian men were each sentenced to two years in jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today for jointly cheating an elderly man of RM15,000 last month.

Magistrate Naidatul Athirah Azman imposed the sentence on Rasyid Arshad, 52, and Mustari, 55, after both pleaded guilty to the charge read against them.

The duo were charged with jointly cheating the 77-year-old man by deceiving him into believing they had won a lottery and needed his identity card to claim the prize.

They then asked the victim to hand over RM15,000, promising to return the money along with an additional RM10,000 reward after obtaining the lottery winnings.

Both accused absconded after receiving the RM15,000 from the victim.

The offence was allegedly committed at a convenience store in Lorong Agenda 1, Medaniaga Lagenda Hutan Melintang in the Bagan Datuk district at 11am on 19 January.

They were charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.

Magistrate Naidatul Athirah also ordered both accused to serve five months in jail after they pleaded guilty to entering the country without valid documents under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Darwis Aghniya Halim Azizi, while both accused were represented by lawyer Faustina Francis.
