41 Terengganu villages at risk of floods due to high tide

KUALA TERENGGANU: Some 41 villages in Terengganu are at risk of being hit by floods following the high tide phenomenon that is expected to occur from tomorrow night until Oct 25.

State Infrastructure and Rural Development Committee chairman Hanafiah Mat said that based on information from the Terengganu Department of Irrigation and Drainage, nine of the villages are located at the estuary of Sungai Terengganu and Sungai Ibai.

“The villages are Kampung Baru Seberang Takir, Kampung Pulau Rusa, Kampung Tanjung Gelam, Kampung Kubang Ikan, Kampung Ulu Takir, Kampung Seberang Takir, Kampung Kuala Ibai, Kampung Pak Tuyu and Taman Purnama.

“The affected villages in the Dungun district are Kuala Paka, Durian Mentangau, Kampung Pinang Merah, Kampung Seberang Pintasan, Kampung Teluk Bidara, Kampung Sura, Kampung Sungai Udang, Kampung Sungai Buaya, Kampung Alor Makbah, Kampung Che Lijah, Kampung Tanjung Jara, Kampung Bijangga and Kampung Sura,” he said.

In the Marang district, the five villages at risk of floods – Kampung Rusila, Kampung Rhu Dua, Kampung Rhu Rendang, Kampung Mercang and Kampung Pulau Rusa Baru – are located at the estuary of Sungai Marang and Sungai Mercang.

The other villages at risk of flooding are Kampung Telaga Papan, Kampung Gong Batu, Kampung Pengkalan Gelap, Kampung Limau Nipis, Kampung Kuala Setiu and Kampung Fikri in the Setiu district; Pengkalan Cicar Bukit Kuang, Kampung Bakau Tinggi, Kampung Baru Kemasek and Pulau Skepeng Kuala Kemaman in the Kemaman district; as well as Kampung Teluk Budu, Kampung Pengkalan Atap, Kampung Pantai and Kampung Nail in the Besut district.

As such, all villagers are advised to be cautious and ready to be evacuated, if necessary.
