Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim hails Bangladesh’s election as a democratic triumph and pledges to strengthen bilateral ties with the new leadership.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairman Tarique Rahman and his party on their emphatic victory in the country’s general election.

In a Facebook post, Anwar described the outcome as a triumph of democracy.

He said the Bangladeshi people had delivered a clear mandate at the ballot box despite facing extraordinary challenges.

The prime minister also expressed appreciation to his friend, Dr Muhammad Yunus, for his stewardship as Chief Adviser during the transition.

Anwar thanked Yunus for ensuring the democratic process proceeded smoothly.

He affirmed that Malaysia remains committed to enhancing engagement with the new Bangladeshi administration.

“Malaysia looks forward to working with the new Bangladeshi leadership to bring new energy to our bilateral ties,” he said.

Anwar added that he joins all Malaysians in extending warmest regards to the people of Bangladesh.

Foreign media reported that over 127.6 million people were eligible to vote in the election.

The poll also included a referendum on constitutional reforms.

This 13th parliamentary election is seen as a significant political milestone for the nation of 175 million people.

It follows a mass uprising in August 2024 that led to the removal of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Tarique Rahman, 60, is the son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia and former president Ziaur Rahman.
