The General Operations Force is seeking extra funds to install high-security barbed wire at 69 demolished illegal jetties along the Malaysia-Thailand border to curb smuggling.
TUMPAT: The General Operations Force will apply for additional government funding to install high-security barbed wire at 69 illegal jetties along the Malaysia-Thailand border.
GOF Southeast Brigade Commander SAC Ahmad Radzi Hussain said the wire, known as Concertina wire, is needed at the remaining demolished jetties.
He stated that barbed wire had previously been installed at 27 of the 97 illegal jetties demolished in an integrated security operation.
“We will seek additional funding for this purpose,” he told reporters at the PGA Tactical Headquarters in Pengkalan Kubor.
A contractor previously installed 1.5 kilometres of barbed wire using a RM100,000 allocation from the Prime Minister’s Department.
Ahmad Radzi hopes the installation will help curb smuggling and other cross-border crimes attempted via illegal bases along Sungai Golok.
The first phase of installation began at the ‘Parking’ illegal base from Rantau Panjang to Pos Ibrahim Pencen.
A total of 27 locations at previously demolished bases were identified for the first phase.
He did not specify the amount of additional funding required for the remaining 69 locations.
