Israeli army strikes Gaza despite ceasefire, killing hundreds

Israeli airstrikes and artillery hit Gaza despite a US-backed ceasefire, with over 600 Palestinians killed and 1,640 injured since the truce began.

GAZA CITY: The Israeli army conducted airstrikes and artillery shelling across the Gaza Strip early Sunday, despite a ceasefire agreement being in force.

Eyewitnesses reported that Israeli warplanes targeted eastern areas of Rafah in southern Gaza.

Israeli military vehicles also opened fire on eastern Khan Younis, while naval forces shelled the city’s coastline.

In Gaza City, Israeli fighter jets carried out strikes on eastern areas, accompanied by sporadic artillery shelling on the same locations.

A US-backed ceasefire has been in place in Gaza since Oct 10, halting Israel’s offensive that began in October 2023.

That offensive has killed more than 72,000 people, most of them women and children, and injured over 171,000 others.

Despite the truce, Israeli forces have committed hundreds of violations through shelling and gunfire, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The ministry states these violations have killed 612 Palestinians and injured 1,640 others since the ceasefire began.
