President Nicolas Maduro says the United States is fabricating a war as Washington deploys an aircraft carrier to the Caribbean region.
CARACAS: Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro asserted Friday the United States was fabricating a war as Washington sent an aircraft carrier to the Caribbean.
Maduro stated they are fabricating a new eternal war that his country will prevent during an address to state broadcasters.
Washington is deploying an aircraft carrier strike group to counter drug-trafficking organisations in Latin America according to the Pentagon.
The Pentagon confirmed this military buildup on Friday amid growing fears of conflict in the region.
US President Donald Trump launched a military campaign in September including 10 F-35 stealth warplanes and eight US Navy ships.
Trump described this campaign as targeting narco-terrorists operating in the region.
Strikes on at least 10 boats have killed over 40 people according to their governments and families.
The victims were reportedly mainly civilians including some fishermen working at sea.
Washington announced joint military exercises with Trinidad and Tobago off Venezuela’s coast on Thursday.
The USS Gravely destroyer will dock in Port of Spain from October 26-30 for these exercises.
A contingent of US Marines will conduct joint training with the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force during this period. – AFP
