Malaysia and Finland strengthen cooperation in tech, satellites, education

Malaysia and Finland agree to enhance bilateral cooperation in high-technology, satellite systems and education sectors, says foreign minister.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Finland have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in several key areas including high-technology transfer, satellites and education.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan stated Finland is recognised for its strong expertise and advanced capabilities in all three sectors.

“Finland has good capacity in high technology and satellites,” he told reporters after his bilateral meeting with Finnish counterpart Elina Valtonen.

Mohamad noted Finland also possesses a strong education system at school level with two Malaysian schools in Damansara and Cyberjaya already adopting its education template.

He revealed these discussions occurred ahead of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from October 26 to 28.

Although trade relations between Malaysia and Finland remain limited, Mohamad said both countries share similar views in prioritising global security.

Mohamad also held a separate meeting today with ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn.

“I took the opportunity to express my appreciation to him and his officials for the support extended to Malaysia during its ASEAN Chairmanship this year,” he said.

Several other matters requiring further refinement were discussed and will be brought to the heads of state level tomorrow morning.

Mohamad said Kao reiterated his appreciation for Malaysia’s leadership as ASEAN Chair, particularly its role in facilitating the Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire.

The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits are expected to be one of the bloc’s largest meetings addressing regional and global challenges comprehensively.

This year marks Malaysia’s fifth ASEAN Chair since the bloc’s 1967 inception following previous chairmanships in 2015, 2005, 1997 and 1977. – Bernama
