Over 5,700 flood victims are housed in relief centres across Kedah, Penang, and Perak as several rivers surpass danger levels.
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 5,788 flood evacuees are currently taking shelter in relief centres across the states of Kedah, Penang, and Perak.
In Kedah, the number of evacuees has increased to 1,708 people housed across 18 relief centres as of 8 pm.
Padang Terap and Sik districts are the latest areas affected by the floods, joining Kulim, Baling, Pokok Sena, and Pendang.
The State Disaster Management Committee reported that Kulim remains the worst-affected district with 1,113 evacuees in eight relief centres.
Baling district has 343 victims accommodated in five different relief centres.
A new relief centre was opened at Dewan Badminton Felda Lubuk Merbau in Padang Terap to house 40 people.
In Sik district, 79 evacuees are sheltering at two centres located in Sekolah Kebangsaan Danglau and Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Betong.
Pendang district is providing shelter for 45 people at the Dewan Kompleks Rakan Sukan Tanah Merah relief centre.
Pokok Sena district has 88 people taking refuge at the Dewan Serbaguna Pokok Sena relief centre.
Six rivers in Kedah have exceeded their respective danger levels according to the Public Infobanjir portal.
The affected rivers include Sungai Pendang in Pendang at 3.42 metres and Sungai Perik in Padang Terap at 14.43 metres.
Sungai Ketil at Kampung Bongor in Baling recorded a reading of 60.27 metres while Sungai Laka in Kubang Pasu reached 22.47 metres.
Sungai Titi Kerbau in Pendang measured 7 metres and Sungai Anak Bukit in Taman Aman, Kota Setar registered 2.69 metres.
Sungai Padang Terap in Kubang Pasu and Sungai Chepir in Sik also recorded danger-level readings of 3.6 metres and 36.33 metres respectively.
In Penang, the number of flood evacuees continues to rise particularly in Seberang Perai Utara and Seberang Perai Tengah districts.
The total number of evacuees in Penang has increased to 1,187 people across three districts as of 7.21 pm.
Seberang Perai Utara district has 386 people housed at SK Lahar Yooi which is operating at 116.97 per cent capacity.
Another 151 evacuees are sheltering at Sekolah Agama Rakyat Nyior Sebatang in Seberang Perai Utara.
SK Padang Menora is accommodating 128 people while the Labuh Banting flood settlement centre is housing 119 evacuees.
Seberang Perai Tengah district has seen its evacuee count rise to 369 people from 220 earlier in the evening.
SK Guar Perahu is housing 313 evacuees while SMK Permatang Pasir is providing shelter for 56 people.
Barat Daya district has 34 people housed at the only relief centre in the district located at SK Tan Sri Awang Had Salleh.
Paya Terubong assemblyman Wong Hon Wai confirmed that cleanup work at the Taman Terubong Jaya landslide site has been completed.
He clarified that no development was taking place on the hill slope where the landslide occurred.
The landslide was caused by heavy rain which triggered soil movement and mud flow according to the assemblyman.
In Perak, the number of people in relief centres has decreased slightly to 2,893 evacuees across 28 centres.
Flood evacuees in 19 relief centres in Larut Matang Selama district have decreased to 1,899 people from 2,042.
Manjung district has seen an increase to 606 evacuees in five relief centres from the previous count of 597.
Kerian district has 278 people taking refuge in three relief centres while Perak Tengah has 110 people in one centre.
The Perak JPBN Secretariat reported that water levels in the Bukit Merah Reservoir and Sungai Slim remain at danger levels. – Bernama
