Thailand and Cambodia sign KL Peace Accord peace deal witnessed by Anwar Ibrahim and Donald Trump, formalising ceasefire and ASEAN observer team

KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand and Cambodia signed a joint declaration on a peace deal dubbed the KL Peace Accord today.
The agreement marks a formal step toward halting hostilities and restoring peace along their disputed border.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Manet signed the accord on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit.
Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim witnessed the signing in his capacity as ASEAN Chair.
United States President Donald Trump also attended the ceremony as a witness.
The declaration reinforces the ceasefire understanding reached in July following talks between the two countries.
It also formalises the establishment of an ASEAN Observer Team to monitor compliance and prevent renewed clashes.
The peace deal marks a milestone in ASEAN’s regional diplomacy under Malaysia’s 2025 Chairmanship.
Thailand and Cambodia have long been in dispute over their 817-kilometre border.
Recent tensions flared into a military confrontation on July 24.
Anwar hosted a high-stakes meeting in Putrajaya between Manet and then Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on July 28.
That meeting successfully defused tensions along the two countries’ shared border.
The ceasefire prevented a broader military escalation and ensured the safety of thousands of civilians.
Malaysia is hosting the 47th ASEAN Summit from Oct 26 to 28 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan outlined key elements of the ceasefire agreement yesterday.
He said the withdrawal of heavy weapons by Thailand and Cambodia from border areas is a crucial component.
The removal and destruction of explosives or landmines are also part of the deal.
Mohamad confirmed the establishment of an ASEAN Observer Team to monitor the conflict-affected border region.
The initiative aims to preserve the ceasefire that has been in place since July.
He noted there have been minor breaches of the ceasefire since July 28.
These breaches did not involve firearms but included the use of slingshots.
Mohamad said ASEAN hopes the ceasefire will hold permanently.
He called on both countries to continue dialogue and work towards a peaceful resolution of their border demarcation issue. – Bernama
