Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet hails KL Peace Accord as historic milestone, pledges full implementation of Cambodia-Thailand deal

KUALA LUMPUR: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet today praised the newly concluded KL Peace Accord as a landmark achievement.

He characterised the agreement as a historic milestone that will significantly advance bilateral stability and cooperation.

Speaking during the signing ceremony on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit, he reaffirmed Cambodia’s strong commitment to fully implementing the deal.

He pledged to continue working closely with Thailand to ensure the accord’s success.

“On behalf of the Cambodian peoples, I wish to express my deepest gratitude to United States President Donald Trump for his decisive leadership and steadfast commitment to supporting the lasting peace between Cambodia and Thailand,” he said.

He also conveyed sincere appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his unwavering support throughout the peace process.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul signed the KL Accord, witnessed by Anwar and Trump at the ceremony.

Manet expressed confidence that the international community and key partners will continue supporting the accord’s implementation.

He noted that senior commanders from both armed forces are discussing an initial phased withdrawal of heavy weaponry.

“This withdrawal serves as an early demonstration of our shared commitment to advancing the agreement’s terms,” he said.

He strongly hoped for the prompt release of 18 Cambodian soldiers on humanitarian grounds as agreed in Joint Declarations.

Manet revealed he has nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for promoting peace between Cambodia and Thailand and other nations.

Thailand and Cambodia have long been locked in an 817-kilometre border dispute, with the latest flare-up on July 24 leading to military confrontation.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim hosted a crucial meeting in Putrajaya between Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on July 28.

This meeting successfully eased tensions along the shared border between the two nations.

The ceasefire represents a major ASEAN achievement that prevented conflict escalation and ensured civilian safety.

Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair for 2025 under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, is hosting the Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre until October 28. – Bernama
