A teacher was tricked into transferring RM100,000 after receiving messages from a scammer posing as her husband on WhatsApp.
JOHOR BAHRU: A kindergarten teacher lost RM100,000 after being deceived by messages on WhatsApp from an individual posing as her husband.
Johor Bahru Selatan police chief ACP Raub Selamat said the 52-year-old victim was asked to lend money to help her ‘husband’, a general manager of a private company, with a business matter.
The scammer claimed the husband’s bank account was unusable.
“Unsuspectingly, the victim made seven bank transfers totalling RM100,000 into three different accounts last Friday,” he said in a statement today.
Only after making the payments did she contact her husband, who was in China on a week-long business trip.
He informed her that his WhatsApp account had been hacked.
Raub said the victim then realised she had been scammed and filed a police report yesterday.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. – Bernama
