Squash stars plot path to historic Olympic debut at LA28

National talents like Sivasangari Subramaniam and Eain Yow Ng can now chart their course to squash’s first-ever Olympic Games, with the qualification system for LA28 unveiled.

WORLD Squash and the Professional Squash Association have announced the five-pathway qualification system for the sport’s Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

The system, approved by the International Olympic Committee, aims to balance elite competition with broad global representation.

A total of 32 players will compete across 16-athlete men’s and women’s singles draws at the Comcast Squash Center.

Qualification routes include Continental Games, Host Country quotas, PSA World Rankings, Universality Places, and a Final World Qualifying Tournament.

Five athletes per gender will qualify through their respective Continental Games, including the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya.

The host nation USA is guaranteed at least one quota place per gender.

Eight more spots per gender will be allocated via the PSA World Ranking.

One universality place per gender will be available for eligible nations, with the final quota per gender decided at a 24-athlete qualification tournament in June 2028.

World Squash President Zena Wooldridge stated the announcement brings the Olympic dream closer for athletes worldwide.

“We are very conscious of the huge suspense and anticipation amongst athletes, coaches and federations regarding squash’s Olympic Qualification System,” she said.

The full qualification guidelines are now available on the official Olympics website.
