Selangor Sultan disappointed over flares incident, calls for firm action

Sultan of Selangor expresses deep disappointment over flares lit on a Terengganu bridge, calling for maximum punishment for those involved.

SHAH ALAM: Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has expressed deep regret and disappointment over the incident in which flares were lit on the Kuala Terengganu Drawbridge in Terengganu, allegedly by supporters of Selangor FC on Sunday.

As the patron of Selangor FC, His Royal Highness also voiced his displeasure over gangsterism and hooliganism among local football supporters, particularly those backing Selangor FC.

“His Royal Highness wants the police to identify the masterminds behind the incident. If found guilty, those involved should be punished with the maximum sentence permitted by law.

“This is meant to serve as a lesson to other Selangor FC supporters so that similar incidents do not recur,” read a statement from Istana Alam Shah today.

The statement also said Sultan Sharafuddin called on all Selangor FC supporters to exercise self-control and uphold the good name of the team and the state.

Sultan Sharafuddin further suggested that Selangor FC supporters found guilty of causing disturbances should be banned from entering stadiums to attend any matches involving the team.

Yesterday, 33 Selangor FC supporters were remanded to assist in investigations into the disturbance at the bridge on Sunday.

The incident, which occurred at about 6.30 pm, took place before the Super League match between Terengganu FC and Selangor FC at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Kuala Nerus on Sunday night.

Kuala Terengganu district police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said they were among about 400 supporters detained and taken to the Kuala Terengganu district police headquarters last night for urine screening.
