Deputy Minister: Shifting youth perspectives for a sustainable agri-food sector

IPOH: Changing the perception of youths towards the agricultural sector is crucial for increasing their involvement and revitalizing the sector, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Chan Foong Hin.

He said the country’s agriculture industry lacks local youth involvement, leading to increased reliance on foreign labour and a negative perception in society, making it less competitive compared to other sectors.

“If we continue to depend on foreign labour and aging farmers in agriculture, there is a concern about the lack of new generation in the industry, negatively impacting the sustainability of the agri-food sector,“ he said in his speech at the launch of the Townhall Session with Agro Madani Leaders as part of the National Farmers, Breeders, and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) 2023 celebration here today.

Some 500 youth Agro enthusiasts or those involved in the agri-food and entrepreneurship sector, as well as 1,000 visitors comprising farmers, breeders, and fishermen, attended the session.

Chan added that the townhall was an engagement medium to share information, technology, innovation, and the experiences of agri-food sector leaders with the Agro Madani youth community. He also hoped it provides guidance, space, and opportunities, particularly for the youth, to engage in the sector.

The laid-back yet informative programme for celebrating HPPNK 2023 aims to find solutions and ignite the interest of the country’s youths to venture into the agricultural sector by introducing cost-effective technology.

Chan added that the Agro Madani community plays a crucial role in advancing the country’s agriculture and fisheries sector, ensuring a sufficient supply of food within the nation.

“The agricultural sector has the potential to yield significant returns if approached with a serious and precise approach. The government is committed to supporting and motivating youths to achieve the country’s agriculture goals, including exporting agri-food products internationally.

“It is hoped that these programmes will encourage youths to be involved in the country’s agri-food sector and contribute to its sustainability,“ he said.

Meanwhile, Chan said various activities and events are being held for HPPNK 2023 at the Sultan Azlan Shah Roundabout here, for three days starting today.

The activities organised throughout HPPNK 2023 are inspired by the MADANI Malaysia Concept and focus on four main areas, namely Agro Millenia, Agro Technology and Innovation, Prosperous MADANI, and Agro MADANI. –Bernama
