MALACCA: The state government has denied that non-Muslims would be involved in Islamic affairs, especially with regard the appointment of surau and mosque committee members.
State Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Rahmad Mariman (pix) said there was an apparent misunderstanding on the mechanism for appointing mosque and surau committee members in Malacca.
“Non-Muslims cannot interfere because we (Muslims) also do not interfere in the affairs of other religions. I also will not allow this to happen and I will make a clearer explanation so that this issue is not politicised,“ he said when contacted by the media here today.
Earlier, the Malacca Islamic Religious Council (MAIM) through a circular dated Oct 25 said that state assembly members in non-Muslim areas could propose a list of committee members with the support of the Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) or secretaries of the State Legislative Assembly Development and Coordination Committee Offices (Japerun) who were Muslim.
The decision was made in the state government meeting which convened on Oct 11, for the appointment of new mosque and surau committee members for the 2024-2026 session. –Bernama
