KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) is strengthening flood mitigation infrastructure and river management nationwide to enhance climate change resilience.

Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that PETRA is implementing a structured approach including the Flood Mitigation Plan project, coastal erosion control, and river estuary conservation.

He added that the River Conservation Project is also being executed for river channelization, bank stabilisation, drainage channel repair, and upgrading of flood control structures.

Under the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan’s First Rolling Plan for 2026, a total of 141 projects have been approved for nationwide implementation.

Fadillah revealed that 20 projects are new while 121 are continuations with an estimated total cost of RM24.7 billion.

All projects were planned considering high-risk area priorities, socio-economic impacts, and continuity of the Flood Mitigation Plan programme under the Twelfth Malaysia Plan.

The ministry through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage also developed the Environmentally Friendly Drainage Master Plan Study as the main reference for sustainable development planning.

This study assesses existing drainage system issues including water quality, drainage capacity, and integration with urban systems.

Fadillah reported that 35 studies have been completed nationwide as of 2025, with 10 being implemented and five in the planning stage.

For the First Rolling Plan under the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan, six new studies have been approved.

The implementation of these studies helps ensure new developments do not increase flooding risks in high-impact areas.

The Department of Irrigation and Drainage has taken action to maintain, deepen, and clean drainage, rivers, and flood reservoirs for the Northeast Monsoon.

The department ensures all related infrastructure and supporting assets function optimally to reduce flood risks and impacts while supporting community safety.

Apart from flood issues, the ministry is also addressing matters related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 raised by Sabah and Sarawak members of parliament.

Fadillah informed that the MADANI Government remains committed to continuing MA63 negotiations with the Sabah and Sarawak state governments according to the Federal Constitution.

He confirmed that 13 of the 29 matters discussed under the official MA63 negotiation platform have been resolved to date.

Nine of these matters were finalised during the MADANI Government’s administration while the remaining four were agreed upon under the previous federal government. – Bernama
