France, Italy and Greece to coordinate military deployments

France, Italy and Greece agree to coordinate military assets to Cyprus and the eastern Mediterranean, ensuring freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.

PARIS: France, Italy and Greece have agreed to coordinate the dispatch of military assets to Cyprus and the eastern Mediterranean. A member of President Emmanuel Macron’s team confirmed the agreement following calls between Macron and the prime ministers of Italy and Greece.

The leaders also agreed to work together to guarantee freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. This coordination follows the recent outbreak of conflict in the Middle East.

On Tuesday, Macron announced France was sending the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean. He also confirmed the deployment of the multipurpose frigate Languedoc and air defence units to Cyprus.

Italy stated it would send naval assets to defend EU member Cyprus “in coming days”. This deployment will be conducted alongside France, Spain and the Netherlands.

Greece said on Monday it was sending two frigates and two F-16 fighter jets to Cyprus. The collective moves underscore a coordinated European military response to regional instability.
