JKR’s sustainability efforts cut carbon emissions by 1.59 million kg CO₂ and saved RM743,625 for the government as of July 2025.

PUTRAJAYA: The Public Works Department (JKR) has achieved significant carbon and energy savings for the government through its green initiatives.

JKR recorded a reduction of 1.59 million kilogrammes of CO₂ equivalent and saved two million kilowatt-hours of energy annually.

These environmental efforts translated into financial savings exceeding RM743,625 for the government as of July 2025.

Director-General Datuk Seri Roslan Ismail attributed this success to various sustainability programmes implemented by the department.

He highlighted energy management plans and green ratings in construction projects as key contributors.

Roslan announced that 143 building projects and 91 road projects have received green rating accreditation under the pHJKR system.

These accredited projects collectively reduced carbon emissions by over 29 million kilogrammes of CO₂ equivalent.

He shared these achievements during his speech at the JKR Greenday 2025 opening ceremony.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi officiated the event attended by JKR staff and industry partners.

Roslan emphasised that these accomplishments support Malaysia’s national carbon reduction targets.

JKR’s efforts align with the goal to cut carbon emissions by 45% by 2030.

The department also supports the government’s commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

JKR is currently drafting the JKR Sustainable Development Policy for 2026–2030.

This policy aims to ensure the department remains relevant and competitive facing future challenges.

The department employs various sustainability instruments including green ratings and waste management plans.

JKR also maintains MS ISO 14001 and MS ISO 50001 certifications for environmental and energy governance.

The JKR Greenday 2025 programme serves as a platform for knowledge sharing on green practices.

It prepares technical personnel to address sustainable development challenges effectively.

Roslan stressed that the younger generation must drive industry change through responsible green practices.

Such programmes raise awareness about sustainable development in project planning and implementation.

The event featured the theme “Green Generation: Empowering Change” with over 300 participants.

Eight guest speakers from various sectors shared their expertise during the programme.

Strategic organisations supporting green initiatives in construction also participated actively.

JKR presented pH Certificates to 12 selected projects achieving three-star ratings or higher.

This recognition honours project teams for their commitment and successful cooperation.

The Works Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable infrastructure development through JKR.

This support aligns with the MADANI Government’s emphasis on well-being, inclusivity and sustainability. – Bernama
