Pahang coastal residents advised to prepare for king tides until Dec 25, with flood risks during Northeast Monsoon season.
KUANTAN: Pahang residents have been advised to remain vigilant for king tides expected until December 25.
Kuantan District Irrigation and Drainage Department engineer Rohushsyifa Ahmad Radzi said sea levels will rise in coastal areas including Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin.
“Residents are advised to take precautionary measures, especially those living near rivers and low-lying areas,” she told reporters after a flood awareness briefing at Kampung Galing Surau.
She warned these locations face flooding risks if king tides coincide with heavy rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon season.
Based on received data, king tides are forecast from today until November 8, plus November 10 and 11 during night and early morning hours.
Additional king tide periods include December 3-7, December 9-11, December 20-22, and December 24-25.
The district has identified 57 flood-prone areas with 19 siren stations currently undergoing testing.
Rohushsyifa noted JPS previously detected animal interference at siren stations.
She urged the public to immediately notify JPS if sirens sound without reason for further action.
Two main siren types operate: warning sirens when river water exceeds warning levels, advising evacuation preparation, and danger sirens when water exceeds danger levels, requiring immediate evacuation. – Bernama
