Alfa Romeo set to return to Malaysia with Stelvio and Tonale

Timothy Prakash

After years of absence, Italian automaker Alfa Romeo is gearing up for an official comeback in Malaysia. The brand, long admired for its blend of performance, design, and unmistakable Italian flair, is set to re-enter the local market under a new boutique-style business model backed by parent company Stellantis.

Stellantis ASEAN Managing Director Isaac Yeo confirmed that Alfa Romeo’s return will take place within the next two years, though not through a conventional mass-market setup. Instead, the brand will operate via a hybrid model system, managed by independent partners rather than directly under Stellantis Malaysia. This approach will allow Alfa Romeo to maintain an exclusive presence while catering to a niche audience of enthusiasts who appreciate the brand’s heritage and craftsmanship.

For those familiar with the marque, this marks an exciting new chapter. Alfa Romeo once enjoyed a loyal following in Malaysia during the late 1990s and early 2000s, when models such as the 156, 147, and GT captivated drivers with their sharp handling and passionate design language. However, limited after-sales support and shifting market dynamics led to the brand’s quiet exit from the Malaysian market. Its upcoming return signals not just a revival, but a redefinition of Alfa Romeo’s role in Malaysia’s evolving premium car landscape.

The first two models slated for introduction are the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the Alfa Romeo Tonale, both SUVs that embody the brand’s signature “la meccanica delle emozioni” — the mechanics of emotion. The Stelvio, named after one of Europe’s most famous mountain passes, combines Alfa’s sports car DNA with the practicality of a luxury SUV. Under its sculpted hood sits a range of turbocharged engines, while its sharp dynamics and rear-biased all-wheel drive system ensure it drives as passionately as it looks.

The Tonale, meanwhile, represents Alfa Romeo’s first step into electrification. Positioned as a compact premium SUV, the Tonale blends Italian design with modern hybrid technology, featuring plug-in hybrid options that promise spirited performance with improved efficiency. It also debuts Alfa Romeo’s latest digital interior and connectivity systems, appealing to a younger generation of premium SUV buyers.

While the Stelvio and Tonale are expected to spearhead the brand’s Malaysian return, sources suggest that the Giulia, Alfa Romeo’s critically acclaimed sports sedan, could join the lineup later. The Giulia, known for its near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution and stunning design, has been a favourite among driving enthusiasts worldwide. Its introduction would provide a compelling alternative to rivals such as the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class — with a distinctly Italian twist.

By positioning itself as a boutique, enthusiast-focused marque rather than chasing volume, Alfa Romeo stands a chance to carve out a unique space in the market.

With the Tonale and Stelvio leading the charge — and the Giulia waiting in the wings — Alfa Romeo’s long-awaited return to Malaysian roads is shaping up to be one of the most exciting comebacks in recent memory. After all, few brands can blend performance, passion, and pedigree quite like Alfa Romeo.
