Melaka health screening sees over 52,000 participants

Over 52,000 individuals in Melaka have undergone free health screenings under the NHSI initiative this year, with Alor Gajah district showing the highest participation rate.

MELAKA: A total of 52,526 individuals aged 18 and above have undergone free health screenings under the National Health Screening Initiative’s target in Melaka this year.

State Health director Dr Ruzita Mustaffa said the initiative aims to encourage early health screening to detect non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

“Based on available statistics, residents in Alor Gajah district recorded the highest participation with 83% or 14,663 people,” she told reporters after officiating the state-level 2025 World Diabetes Day celebration.

Jasin district followed with 75% participation (7,449 people) while Melaka Tengah recorded 70% (36,167 people).

Screenings can be conducted at all nearby health clinics and health counters during outreach programmes organised by the state Health Department.

Dr Ruzita said NHSI has entered its third year of implementation with achievements exceeding set targets in the past two years.

This year’s screenings were open to all individuals aged 18 and above, compared to previous years when they were limited to those aged 35 and above.

“Based on recent health trends, many young individuals aged between 18 and 29 have health issues such as diabetes and hypertension, but they are unaware of it until they undergo health screenings,” she said. – Bernama
