Selangor police dismantle RM1 million contraband cigarette network

Four foreign men arrested in Sungai Buloh raid, with RM1.01 million worth of cigarettes and vehicles seized in contraband distribution bust

SHAH ALAM: Police have dismantled a contraband cigarette distribution network following a raid in Sungai Buloh on October 18.

Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said four foreign men were arrested while unloading cigarette boxes from a lorry into several vehicles at 3.30 am.

The suspects, aged between 21 and 38, had valid travel documents and entered Malaysia last year.

“Preliminary investigations found the suspects, who worked as contract labourers, were involved in cigarette smuggling on a part-time basis,” Shazeli told a press conference.

He said they earned between RM100 and RM200 daily depending on the quantity handled.

The vehicles used were registered under other individuals’ names, while the storage premises was a rented house owned by a local.

“The group is believed to be operating independently, without links to larger syndicates,” Shazeli added.

He said they claimed to have no knowledge of the financial source behind the operation and were only paid for their work.

Police seized 8,727 cartons of cigarettes worth RM639,470 from various brands.

A bonded lorry and seven cars worth RM374,600 were also confiscated, bringing the total seizure value to RM1.01 million.

All four suspects were remanded and will be handed over to Kajang District Police Headquarters for further investigation.

They are believed to be linked to another case in the Kajang area.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1963. – Bernama
