Bringing inclusivity, creativity and community empowerment to the runway
MANAGEMENT and Science University (MSU) hosted the MSU Modest Selangor Runway 2025 (MSR) representing a unique platform celebrating contemporary modest fashion while promoting the values of empathy, inclusivity, and community empowerment.
The showcase served as the grand finale of MSU Fashion Week 2025, which brought together emerging designers, students, and industry professionals in a vibrant display of creativity and cultural expression, marking a significant highlight in the university’s fashion calendar.
MSR 2025 carried the theme “Harmonisation of Arts and Culture,” highlighting a blend of cultural elements, creative expression and innovation in modest fashion. There were five main segments featured presenting 68 modest designs produced by bachelor’s and diploma students from MSU’s fashion design programmes, together with industry collaborators.
A key highlight of MSR 2025 was the opening segment organised together with Persatuan Bunga-Bunga Syurga, which featured children with Down Syndrome (termed a disability), as young models.
This presentation showcased 20 textile-based creations, aimed at raising public awareness on diverse abilities and the importance of inclusive spaces in the fashion industry. Their participation not only celebrated their creativity and uniqueness, but also helped build self-confidence, while offering opportunities for positive self-expression.
In addition, MSR featured an international showcase by UEDA College of Fashion Japan, presenting 10 cross cultural designs. In collaboration with MSU alumni under the brand “Modest” by MSU X, Fyqa Abaya Mustafa.co also showcased a hijab collection that combined modesty and elegance.
Both male and female collections designed by Bachelor’s and Diploma students further demonstrated creativity, technical skill and thoughtful craftsmanship in producing modern, modest and functional garments.
The event was officiated by Professor Tan Sri Dato Wira Dr. Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid, founder and president of MSU.
Also at the event was Professor Puan Sri Datuk Dr Junainah Abd Hamid, vice-chancellor of MSU, Professor Dr. Abdul Jalil Ghazali, senior vice-president for industry linkages and entrepreneurship, Dr. Hitoshi Tajima, President of UEDA College of Fashion Japan, Makoto Morishito, Azizul Jamaludin, member of the MSU Board of Governors and Dean of the School of Hospitality and Creative Arts (SHCA) as well as industry partners.
MSR 2025 also supported the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) through its focus on quality education (SDG 4), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), responsible consumption and production (SDG 12) and partnership for the goals (SDG 17). Beyond celebrating creativity, the event further strengthened experiential learning while opening opportunities for closer collaboration between the university, community and fashion industry.
Overall, the MSU Modest Selangor Runway 2025 successfully showcased the beauty and elegance of modest fashion while conveying the message that fashion is a space for unity regardless of background or physical ability.
The participation of children with Down Syndrome demonstrated that fashion could serve as a medium to empower individuals, build confidence and foster greater public awareness and understanding of diversity.
With continued industry and community support, MSR 2025 strengthens MSU’s role in nurturing young designers who are creative, competitive, empathetic and innovative, ensuring that the fashion field continues to evolve as an inclusive avenue that celebrates culture, creativity and compassion.
