Royal Professor Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas laid to rest

Islamic scholar and thinker Royal Professor Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas was buried in Kuala Lumpur, attended by royalty and the Prime Minister

KUALA LUMPUR: Royal Professor Tan Sri Dr Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas was laid to rest at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery today.

The 94-year-old scholar and contemporary Islamic civilisation thinker passed away yesterday evening.

His hearse arrived at the cemetery at noon, with the burial completed half an hour later.

Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah was among those present.

Earlier, funeral prayers were held at Masjid al-Taqwa in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and several Cabinet ministers attended the service alongside family, friends and local residents.

The prayer was led by the scholar’s son, Datuk Dr Syed Ali Tawfik Al-Attas.

Syed Muhammad Naquib was the founder and former director of the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC).

He died at 6.47 pm yesterday.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, conferred the title of Royal Professor on him in October 2024.

This recognised his contributions to the country, particularly in Islamic education.

The title of Royal Professor is the highest and most esteemed professorship in Malaysia, bestowed by the King.
