Langkawi boat tragedy death toll rises to 22

Two more bodies recovered in Langkawi waters as search for capsized boat victims continues on fourth day.

LANGKAWI: Search teams recovered two more bodies from the waters off Langkawi this morning, bringing the death toll from the capsized boat incident to 22.

The fourth day of the search and rescue operation saw 14 survivors already accounted for.

Kedah and Perlis Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency director First Admiral Romli Mustafa confirmed the Marine Police Force discovered a man’s body floating near Pulau Singa Besar at 10.10 am.

“The body was taken to the MMEA Jetty and handed over to the police for further action,” he said in a statement.

Shortly afterwards, the Fire and Rescue Department reported finding another man’s body in Selat Chincin near Pulau Anak Datai.

That body was transported to Kubang Badak Jetty and also handed to police authorities.

Romli said the operation resumed at 7.30 am today and expanded to cover 329.67 square nautical miles across 14 search sectors.

“The MMEA, together with all agencies involved, will continue the search efforts and provide updates from time to time until the operation is fully concluded,” he added.

A total of 200 personnel from various agencies are participating in the massive operation.

They are supported by 14 assets from the MMEA, Royal Malaysia Police, Royal Malaysian Navy, Fire and Rescue Department, Marine Police Force and Civil Defence Force. – Bernama
