Malaysia must become semiconductor hub quickly, says PM Anwar

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urges Malaysia to rapidly become a semiconductor and AI hub, calling for new approaches in education and policy

BANGI: Malaysia must move swiftly to become a regional hub for semiconductors and digital technology amid rapid artificial intelligence growth, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.

Speaking at the 2025 International Higher Education Islamic Studies Convention, Anwar stressed that new technological advancements must be mastered for national development.

“We cannot lag behind,” he said at the event held at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

“Malaysia must become a semiconductor hub and rapidly advance in mastering emerging digital technologies and artificial intelligence.”

Anwar urged all stakeholders, including Islamic studies students, to explore semiconductors for new opportunities and economic benefits.

He called for new approaches within Islamic studies faculties to keep pace with technological change.

“AI evolves threefold in just one year,” he added.

The prime minister emphasised that Malaysia’s political stability enables swift implementation of semiconductor policies.

He previously highlighted that the electrical and electronics industry requires strong international networks with major powers like the United States and China.

The convention brings together scholars and academic leaders to strengthen Islamic studies in Malaysia.

Also present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar. – Bernama

What Asean’s small businesses really need for a truly inclusive digital economy

The Asean Digital Economy Framework Agreement promises to unlock up to US$2 trillion in growth by harmonising digital policies and easing cross-border trade. But for the region’s 71 million MSMEs, the real challenge is far more basic: navigating slow, fragmented and costly processes that make “Asean as one market” feel out of reach. Small business owners still struggle with inconsistent taxes, months-long product registrations and a lack of clear, practical guidance. What they need is simplicity, speed, affordability and a unified, actionable knowledge base that helps them comply and compete across borders. True digital integration goes beyond policy—it requires an ecosystem that empowers MSMEs to thrive.
