MCMC reminds social media users to share content responsibly during elections, warning of RM500,000 fines for 3R violations under Section 233
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has reminded social media users to maintain ethical conduct when sharing content during the election period.
While differing political views are normal in democratic practice, they must be conveyed politely and prudently without inciting violence.
Digital platforms should serve as channels for authentic and constructive information sharing.
They should not become spaces for sowing hatred, provocation, or insults that could undermine national harmony.
Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 strictly prohibits disseminating seditious content touching on 3R elements.
The prohibited 3R elements cover religion, race, and the royal institution.
The law also bans obscene, false, threatening, or highly offensive content through network facilities.
Convicted individuals may face fines up to RM500,000 or imprisonment up to two years, or both.
MCMC will take firm action including investigations and enforcement against any law violators.
The commission continues close cooperation with police and the Election Commission to ensure accountability.
This collaboration aims to maintain public order throughout the election period. – Bernama
