The woman explained that she couldn’t fathom why people think that renting is a downgrade.

In Malaysia, owning a home is often seen as a major milestone and a symbol of success. But as times progress, many choose to rent.

However renting is sometimes unfairly viewed as a “lesser” choice, even though it can offer financial freedom, mobility, and lower responsibilities like maintenance and property taxes.

One annoyed Malaysian woman took to Threads to express her frustrations towards her guests who have the tendency to ask if her house is rented or owned.

“I really get annoyed when guests come to my house and ask if it’s rented or owned. Hey, are you going to pay the monthly rent? I’m grateful to have a shelter and not be homeless or staying at someone else’s place.”

She added that renting isn’t a downgrade but actually a smart move to avoid extra utilities and fees.

“I also don’t understand why people think renting is a downgrade, when it’s actually a smart move to avoid paying extra utilities and fees. And if you don’t like it, you can move out anytime.”

Her bold words and the supportive comments struck a chord online, with a few Malaysians sharing their own experiences dealing with nosy guests.

@khayati2974 pointed out how intrusive some questions can be: “1- Have you bought it yet? 2- Finished paying it off? 3- If renting, how much per month? 4- Who are you living with?”

“Once I ordered a Grab and my relative, a really nosy guy, was with me. During the ride, he kept asking why I took so long to finish my degree, why I studied part-time, and why I liked working in retail… When we got home, he asked sarcastically, ‘Is this house rented or owned?’ I said rented. In my head, I thought, ‘At least my husband is a scientist! What are you even doing with your life?” shared another.

Another user noted the importance of being polite: “If you want to ask, at least be considerate of the homeowner’s feelings — just compliment how nice it is.”
