Man killed in hit-and-run while refuelling car on highway

A man was killed in a hit-and-run while helping refuel a friend’s car on the roadside of the East-West Highway near Gerik.

IPOH: A 21-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run incident while helping to refuel a friend’s stranded vehicle on the roadside of the East-West Highway near Gerik.

Gerik district police chief Supt Abdul Samad Othman said the incident occurred at KM2.6 of the Gerik-Jeli highway yesterday afternoon.

He stated that initial investigations found a Proton Saga had run out of fuel, prompting its driver to contact the victim to deliver petrol.

“The victim then rode a motorcycle to the location, and while they were refuelling the car on the right side of the road, they were suddenly hit by a white car travelling from Jeli towards Gerik,” said Abdul Samad in a statement today.

The victim was taken to Gerik Hospital with severe injuries but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment later that evening.

Abdul Samad confirmed that the driver of the Proton Saga was not injured in the incident.

Police are now actively tracking down the driver of the unidentified white car, who fled the scene after the collision.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.

Members of the public with any information are urged to contact the traffic unit at the Gerik district police headquarters.
