“Those buying RM300 Raya clothes, how much savings do you have?” – M’sian with RM56k savings says her Raya outfits cost under RM100

“Because I have RM50k savings but my Raya clothes are below RM100. If it’s more than RM100, I already feel it’s expensive.”

A simple question about festive spending has snowballed into a heated online debate, after a woman revealed she has over RM50,000 in savings but still chooses to spend less than RM100 on her Hari Raya outfits.

“Just asking… those of you who buy Raya clothes for RM300–400, how much savings do you have?

“Because I have RM50k savings but my Raya clothes are below RM100. If it’s more than RM100, I already feel it’s expensive.

“Same with tudung, RM30 and below is okay, anything above, I won’t buy.”

She also attached a screenshot of her bank savings which showed an amount of RM56,501.08.

However, what appeared to be a casual question soon drew sharp responses from netizens.

Some challenged her logic, suggesting that those who spend more might actually have significantly higher savings.

“You have RM50k and buy cheap clothes — so those spending RM300 must have even more savings, right,” one commenter wrote sarcastically.

“Of course you think above RM100 is expensive because your savings are so little. The question is, why is it so little?”

Others accused her of subtly showing off, with one user pointing out that people with six-figure savings rarely feel the need to disclose their finances publicly.

“Most people with six-figure savings are too embarrassed to show off. What were you thinking to show that RM50k?”

The criticism didn’t sit well with the original poster, who defended herself, insisting that RM50,000 was not a large amount — and that her frugal habits were precisely why she saves.

“Who said it’s a lot? That’s why I buy cheap clothes,” she replied.
