PM urges moderation, compassion in Aidilfitri celebrations

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim calls for a mindful Aidilfitri, highlighting global conflicts and economic pressures while emphasising unity and Ramadan’s enduring values.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the public to celebrate Aidilfitri with moderation and compassion.

He called for greater mindfulness towards those suffering amid global geopolitical turmoil, particularly in West Asia.

Anwar stated that Malaysia is not immune to the impact of the regional conflict stemming from attacks by Israel.

He warned that the situation would affect oil and goods prices, increasing living costs and pressuring the national economy.

“So, that’s why the government will do its best to ease the people’s burden,” he said in a special televised Aidilfitri address.

He affirmed the government’s commitment to reviving the spirit of Ramadan and caring for the poor.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, expressed optimism about Malaysia’s economic position achieved in recent years.

“And we, the MADANI Government, will strive to defend and strengthen this position as challenges mount,” he said.

He emphasised that Ramadan serves as a spiritual school shaping character through worship.

The values nurtured during Ramadan must be sustained to enhance Muslims’ inner strength, he added.

This strength is a prerequisite for Malaysia to advance more swiftly and confidently.

He reminded the people to safeguard unity and harmony despite differing global views and trials.

Anwar stressed that the country’s strength lies in unity of resolve, hearts, thought, and deeds.

Malaysia was built on a foundation of diversity, he noted.

Traditions like open houses during Aidilfitri have become deeply ingrained practices for all races.

“On this day of celebration, let us resolve to realise the Malaysia MADANI agenda,” he said.

This agenda aims to uplift human dignity, uphold justice, and ensure equitable prosperity and security.

The Prime Minister also called on Muslims to celebrate in accordance with religious traditions and Malay cultural practices.
