Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia supports diplomatic efforts for lasting stability between Afghanistan and Pakistan, grounded in compassion and solidarity.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia hopes ceasefire efforts between Afghanistan and Pakistan will lead to lasting regional stability. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed this position during a telephone conversation with Afghanistan’s Acting Prime Minister, Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund.
Anwar said they discussed South Asian developments, particularly the tensions and ongoing ceasefire efforts between the two nations. He detailed Malaysia’s approach in a Facebook post following the call.
Malaysia will continue playing an active role through the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation regarding Afghanistan. This involves assessing recognition of the de facto authorities while upholding justice, inclusivity, and rights protections.
“Our approach remains anchored in a balance between principle and pragmatism,” Anwar said. He described it as fostering hope and demonstrating leadership for peace.
Malaysia remains consistent in supporting diplomatic efforts by other nations. Anwar specifically cited roles played by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkiye.
Humanitarian assistance is also being strengthened through strategic cooperation. Anwar noted partnerships with Global Peace Mission and MERCY Malaysia.
These initiatives focus on improving educational infrastructure and providing medical training. They also aim to enhance disaster preparedness in Afghanistan.
“These initiatives reflect Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening solidarity within the ummah,” Anwar stated. During the call, he also conveyed Aidilfitri greetings to the Afghan leader and its people.
