A Kedah chicken slaughterhouse was fined RM30,000 for discharging effluent exceeding legal limits, following a DOE enforcement operation last July.

ALOR SETAR: A chicken slaughtering company in Bukit Pinang was fined RM30,000 by the Sessions Court here for failing to comply with industrial effluent discharge standards.

The firm pleaded guilty to two charges under the Environmental Quality Act 1974.

On the first count, the company released effluent containing excessive Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Suspended Solids and Ammonia Nitrogen.

The second charge was for releasing effluent with Chemical Oxygen Demand exceeding the legal limits.

The offences were detected during an integrated enforcement operation on July 22 last year.

Department of Environment officers collected samples from the company’s Industrial Effluent Treatment System.

The samples were later analysed by the Chemistry Department, confirming breaches of environmental regulations.

Sessions Court judge N. Priscilla Hemamalini imposed the fine after the company director pleaded guilty.

The company was charged under the Environmental (Industrial Effluent) Regulations 2009.
