Sixteen face court over violent brawl outside Johor school

Fourteen students and two women have been charged in connection with a violent brawl outside a secondary school in Skudai last week.

JOHOR BAHRU: Fourteen students and two women were brought before the Magistrates’ Court here on separate charges connected to a fight outside a secondary school in Skudai.

The students were charged with being members of an unlawful assembly with the common intention of fighting and committing rioting, resulting in violence during the assembly.

The alleged offence took place in front of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Selesa Jaya at approximately 12.45 pm on April 10, under Section 147 of the Penal Code.

Six male students aged between 12 and 16 pleaded guilty to the charge, while eight others aged between 15 and 17 pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Magistrate Nabilah Nizam.

The court set April 29 to obtain social reports and case facts for the six who pleaded guilty, and for document submission and counsel appointment for the remaining eight.

All the accused students were granted bail of RM800 each with one surety, with the proceedings involving the minors heard in camera.

In the same proceeding, R Loganayagi, 36, pleaded not guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to a male student at the same location and time under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

The court granted her bail of RM2,000 with one surety and set April 28 for document submission for her case.

In a separate proceeding before Magistrate Atifah Hazimah Wahab, S Lakshmy, 37, also pleaded not guilty to the same charge under Section 323.

She was granted bail of RM2,000 with her case set for further mention on May 14.

Deputy public prosecutor Anis Shafeeqah Mohd Shariffudin, who appeared for the prosecution, said the accused were represented by lawyers from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
